Built in 1793, “The Temperance Tavern” is an extraordinary place … a beautifully restored 14 room, 18th Century Colonial steeped in history, located in the Gilmanton Four Corners Historic District, just north of Canterbury Shaker Village, and located in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. “The Tavern” was once the Governor’s Mansion, an inn, and served for 100 years as the overnight stagecoach stop and pub on the Boston to Canada (and back) trail.

Now a private residence, the historic 1793 Temperance Tavern features six working open hearth fireplaces, Indian shutters, wide floorboards, and authentic museum-quality wall stenciling, the work of artist Moses Eaton, whose work is well known for its classically inspired urban-based work, featuring more refined and earlier patterns that echo Federal-style images.
